Why is it that positive thinking, creative visualization or the law of attraction work for some and not for others? Do you work hard, do affirmations, send your message out to the universe and still fall short? And then work harder and harder only to discover you are just digging your hole deeper and deeper? Why are things not working out for you?

The Poverty of Positive Thinking eBook Marty Schur

I am so grateful to find this incredible book. It puts to words with clarity and scientific backing that which I intuitively know despite what I've been conditioned to do and think. I wish I had read this book years ago. After years of working in the mental health field as well as medicine and working with so many patients and clients, I can see where I may have done harm not ever intending to do so, but in light of this wisdom, it is clear that I could have been more helpful had I been trained differently. This book should be a manual in every psychology class, as well as any helping profession where our job is to support others. Nurses, doctors, massage therapists, social workers, ANYONE who is paid to help individuals. This world would be a much better place. Thank you Marty Schur, for taking the time to put in writing for all to see what I believe we can all benefit from. To be better friends, partners, parents. This is a good place to start!

The Poverty of Positive Thinking eBook Marty Schur Reviews

Mr. Schur has put a great deal of thought into his thesis that knowing what you truly are (and feel) is more useful than a positive attitude, that true empathy is a more useful tool than advice or sympathy for friends in distress. Although it seems clear that most people would prefer a listening ear to a punch on the shoulder and "cheer up!", this can be difficult to put into practice.

He uses several examples of situations in which honest self assessment and sincerity aids in managing emotions and relationships successfully, challenging the notion of the law of attraction.

His treatise suffers a bit on the organization front; the headers are useful, but could have been divided up into more general subgroups. Still, this is a thought provoking read for the introspective, putting into words principles that I think many are somewhat subconsciously aware of.
This book was really and truly exceptional and I mean it. It was very well written and one can tell the author is
well read. It was concise, to the point and his thoughts flowed very well. I learned a lot from reading it and
wondered why I rebelled at the positive thinking and abundance theories but the author is right on target and
explains everything very well. Its better than therapy.

Marty Schur needs to write more books. He is a brilliant writer. I really enjoyed the book. I like the way he makes a point and then backs up his point with facts and logic. It was very easy to follow his thinking.

Even though positive thinking has always led to good things for me, I know a lot of people who think positive thoughts but don't get the results that I do. From reading this book I now know why. Marty has given me a clearer understanding of how people can actually be sabotaging themselves with positive thoughts if they do not address some underlying problems first.

I consider this book a must read for anyone who wishes to improve and enrich there lives. Thank you Marty.
Mr. Schur's book offers a very good overview of why the power of positive thinking is not as powerful as one might think. He even brings in brain science to demonstrate his point. The last part of his writing addresses what he sees as the solution for solving personal problems. I was much more interested in this part of his thesis than in the research. In fact, I would have liked to have read more about Mr. Schur's personal journey, as he seems to have thought very deeply about this subject. I think sharing more of his insights thru his lifetime experiences would have been very enlightening.
This piece brings up an idea that we in our culture rarely consider; that positive thinking can actually be detrimental to our well-being. This is not, of course, to say that positive thinking is inherently harmful, but instead that the way our culture conditions its citizens to have a constantly positive attitude and ignore or purposefully downplay negative thoughts is dangerous. Negative thoughts or emotions are as important as positive ones, and it is part of a healthy human experience to recognize and work through such negativity. In his brief essay, Marty formulates a well-considered argument, one that is sure to make the reader pause and say to themselves, "You know, I'd never thought about it that way before."
